Don't steal music! This is music for my friends to check out so we can all be on the same page. Borrow these tunes, listen a dozen-ish times... then decide if you should buy it or delete it. xoxo

Girlfriends

Rating: 9.999789
Loops, Post-Hardcore, One Man Band, Yelling, Emotional, Guitar Rock

Girlfriends is one dude, Jerry Joiner. He plays live looped guitar and keyboard, then sings and drums along. The closest i can describe it is to say it is like the guitarist from Don Caballero playing with Black Eyes.

Pay what you want. I am actually supporting his fund for the next album, AND i can't wait to get my cassette copy of the album!  http://girlfriends.bandcamp.com/album/girlfriends

Is this thing on?

Anybody pay any attention to this? More likely than not, the answer is a very loud "NO"! (if no one says no, can you still hear it?)

I am thinking about picking this back up. I have been avidly digging into the Free and glorious music available throughout the internet. Sometimes it is just some entirely random person's personal twiddles, sometimes it is a PR move from some soon-to-be unleashed "next be thing". It's fun. It gives me the thrill of the hunt, the undeniable satisfaction of knowing things others don't know, and it is a LEGAL way to constantly enjoy new stuff for free.

Here are a couple of the most super cool things. If i have the time in the future, i will try to post listings as i find things.

Cheers!

Keif's LIFE

I am currently reading Keith Richards' autobiography, LIFE. As with most rocker bios, i have gotten much more into the main character's discography than ever before. Sure, i have owned Hot Rocks for ten years, and i enjoy listening to their late-60s / early-70s discography with my father-in-law... but i don't think i ever appreciated them. I grew up in the 80s, and by then, the Stones were just the epitome of rock n roll excess and nothing more.

But these guys used to ROCK and write really good tunes. Excellent chord changes, interesting rhythmic phrasing and the occasional brilliant lyric. "The sunlight bores the daylights outta me." - beat that line, dude!

Check out three of my new, lesser-known faves:

"Rocks Off" - Exile on Main Street

"Can't You Here Me Knockin'" - Sticky Fingers

"Monkey Man' - Let It Bleed

An Open Letter

Dearest world-wide recording industry conglomerate and associated secret police types:

My external hard drive crashed, taking with it approximately seventy-five gigabytes of music and thirty gigabytes of video. While i do honestly own at least eighty percent of these documents, time is money. I feel i will get a much bigger bang for my "buck" by downloading bit torrents of whole discographies rather than sitting down for days loading each individual disc into the computer and/or re-converting my LPs to mp3 format. I hope you can see the sense in this and not sue me like money-grubbing a-holes.

Lots of love from your faithful servant,

The Weeknd

I resisted it. No, really. Soooo trendy as far as i can tell. I hate to be the 2nd-to-last guy to jump on the train of something that's been making the hipster circuit for a season already. And that is definitely what this is.

But i'll be damned if it isn't great.

It sounds like the perfect sound track for the party and follow-up "necking" scene in a horror movie. And it gives that same sense of fun and impending doom.

I don't know if this fellow does his own production. I doubt it. But i hope he does. If not, it will be another Kid Cudi story: awesome weird production on the free interblog mixtapes, and settle down to normal after signing. As it is, this stuff is fab. Dark, moody, lots of real guitar and bass.

Lyrics are so bad you'd have to pull out an R Kelly record to beat it, but at the same it is so ugly and weird.
"She gave me sex and a handbag
i got her wetter than a wetknap...
  I heard he do drugs now;
you heard wrong, i been on it for a minute
   .....Bring out the glass tables"

Why am i spending so much time on justifying this? Because, frankly, it sounds a little like Usher... and my kid's babysitter loves Usher. So that's kind of like a double dip of dis, right?

Dude's mixtape is free on his site

Hound DOG

Beat this!  I now have a favorite blues man. Crusty fuzz meets frantic open-tuned slide - FIFTY years ago!
